The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone recently hosted the momentous Bursary Awarding Ceremony, which occurred momentarily after observation of Youth Month in recognition of former RBIDZ Study Assistance (bursary) beneficiaries who have since completed their tertiary studies as well as new beneficiaries who are pursuing their tertiary studies respectively.

The entity takes pride in the contribution made by its Corporate Social Investment Programme, which continues to yield positive outcomes towards the livelihoods of its neighbouring communities.

Being the vehicle for socio-economic transformation, the RBIDZ takes high regard for education, as a pillar for youth development and skills enhancement as well as the well-being of society in general.

Officiating the ceremony were the RBIDZ Board Chairperson, Dr. Sakhile Ngcobo together with the Social and Ethics, Board Committee Chairperson, Mr. Elphas Mbatha who emphasised the importance of education and the need for the company to optimise the funding that will solely focus on youth and skills development. Dr. Ngcobo made a citation of the impending RBIDZ Community Trust which should be able to provide for communities through its equity, and also be able to focus on areas such as education, ICT, entrepreneurship, sports, and recreation to facilitate social cohesion.

Mr. Mbatha further emphasised the importance of corporate governance within companies and its importance in driving social stability and sustainability hence the RBIDZ’s emphasis on social facilitation and programmes that aim to develop communities in various spectrums of life such as skills and food security through agricultural programmes.

Also speaking at the ceremony was RBIDZ CEO, Mr. Thabane Zulu who concluded by stating that the bursary is one step towards making it possible for students to pursue their careers. With the chance to further their education, each student is given the opportunity of a better economic future, he said. “Education is the foundation of individual capacity and competitiveness and the most important factor in economic development, for it is the acquisition and utility of knowledge that drives nations”.

Appreciation was extended to the former group who were the first beneficiaries of the programme when it was implemented in 2017. They were recognised for having paved the way for the current and future beneficiaries, through their demonstration for true commitment and exceptional performance in their fields of study.

Xolile Mbambo, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) Accounting graduate together with Thabani Mkhwanazi, Durban University of Technology (DUT), Bachelor of the Built Environment in Geomatics graduate representing all beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the bestowment and being chosen to benefit from the programme.

Xolile specifically recapitulated back to when she was still desperately searching for funding opportunities and how the RBIDZ truly came through for her.  She delivered motivation to the upcoming students to chase their dreams and make hard work and discipline the centre of their journey.

The programme was supported by the City of uMhlathuze leadership, represented by Chief Operations Officer, Ms. Thembeka Khumalo, who steered the programme and commended the RBIDZ for the impactful initiative that prioritises local youth, also citing the dense need for youth to be centralized, capacitated and sharpened for the evolving market demands.

The RBIDZ is an organisation made up of real people, with a real dedication, and passion to effect real change in South Africa. This commitment and energy is apparent in all dealings with not only each other but with potential investors too.
