Study Assistance Programme successes at RBIDZ

Celebrating the achievements of young professionals who have benefitted from the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) Study Assistance Programme, bursary beneficiaries were commended for successfully completing their tertiary studies at a glittering function on Thursday. Held at the RBIDZ techno Park, the awards ceremony was attended by bursary students, former study assistance beneficiaries, their parents, guardians, and RBIDZ board members and officials.

Since the programme inception in 2017, the initiative has made funds available to assist needy students from across King Cetshwayo District to further their studies. It forms part of RBIDZ’s responsibility to plough back into communities, as well as the prioritisation of education and skills development. The bursary accommodates the study areas of Applied Geology, Actuarial Science, Quantity and Land Surveying, Built Environment, Accounting, Construction Management and Chemical Engineering. It covers full tuition, accommodation, meals, textbooks, and other study resources.

Speaking at the event, board chairperson Dr. Sakhile Ngcobo encouraged the beneficiaries to be ambassadors of RBIDZ and identify themselves with the company’s core value. “We would like to see our students and graduates become innovators; problem solvers who find solutions to issues plaguing society, including unemployment, inequality, water and electricity challenges, poverty, and load-shedding.

“Our students must look to solve problems, not just to graduate to find work. “The youth must open businesses and create jobs, as not enough focus is given to entrepreneurship. “They have to become fearless; take risks and make choices to surround themselves with the right people who can propel them forward,” said Ngcobo.

Meanwhile, bursary beneficiaries and graduates Xolile Mbambo from eSikhaleni who completed her National Diploma in Accounting, said the programme covered all her costs and expenses, and removed the burden from her grandmother with whom she lived. “My grandmother encouraged me to apply for every bursary I came across, and I was grateful to be invited into the RBIDZ study assistance programme. “I am studying towards my Advanced Diploma in Accounting and working as an intern at uMhlathuze Municipality,” she said.

The RBIDZ is an organisation made up of real people, with a real dedication, and passion to effect real change in South Africa. This commitment and energy is apparent in all dealings with not only each other but with potential investors too.
