RBIDZ Strengthens Commitment to SMME and Youth Development Through Solar Training Initiative

RBIDZ strengthens commitment to SMME and youth development through solar training initiative

The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) continues to make meaningful strides in advancing inclusive economic development by prioritising the empowerment of Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and the youth through targeted capacity-building initiatives.
As part of this commitment, the RBIDZ, through its Corporate Social Investment Programme, has launched a Solar Panel Installation, Maintenance and Repair, Health and Safety Training Programme aimed at equipping selected categories of local SMMEs, youth-owned enterprises, and community-based businesses with critical skills in the fast-growing renewable energy sector.
The initiative underscores RBIDZ’s proactive approach to addressing South Africa’s pressing socio-economic challenges, particularly the high unemployment rate. By investing in practical, future-focused skills development, the organisation aims to ensure that local SMMEs and young people are not only capacitated to sustain themselves, but are also empowered to become catalysts for job creation within their own communities.
RBIDZ emphasised that its ongoing focus on SMME and youth development is rooted in the need to build a resilient and inclusive local economy.
“We want to ensure that SMMEs and youth are equipped with relevant skills that will assist them to develop themselves economically and, importantly, create employment opportunities for others within their communities,” RBIDZ COO, Muzi Shange noted. “This is especially critical in the context of the high unemployment rate, which continues to affect many households in our region.”
The Solar Panel Installation, Maintenance and Repair, Health and Safety Training Programme has already benefited six beneficiaries from local communities, including Mzingazi and Mandlazini, who have successfully undergone training through the initiative. The programme specifically targeted youth-owned organisations and community-based enterprises, providing participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience in solar photovoltaic (PV) installation, maintenance, repair, and safety compliance.
Through this training, beneficiaries are now better positioned to tap into emerging opportunities within the renewable energy sector an industry that is becoming increasingly important as South Africa continues to pursue sustainable alternatives to traditional energy sources.
By targeting specific groups and categories of businesses within the locality, RBIDZ ensures that the programme has a direct and lasting impact at grassroots level. Participating SMMEs and beneficiaries will be better positioned to diversify their services, improve business competitiveness, and participate meaningfully in the growing green economy. For young participants, the programme also creates pathways towards entrepreneurship, employability, and sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative aligns with RBIDZ’s broader strategic objectives of fostering industrial growth, supporting enterprise development, and promoting skills transfer within the region. Over the years, RBIDZ has implemented a range of programmes focused on mentorship, access to funding opportunities, and market linkages, all aimed at strengthening the capacity of emerging businesses.
Community stakeholders have welcomed the solar training initiative, recognising its potential to address both skills shortages and unemployment challenges simultaneously. By equipping individuals with practical, income-generating skills, RBIDZ is helping to stimulate local economic activity while promoting sustainable development practices.
Importantly, the focus on renewable energy training reflects a forward-looking vision that recognises both the economic and environmental imperatives of the present and the future. As demand for clean energy solutions continues to grow, initiatives such as this ensure that local communities are not left behind, but instead become active participants in shaping the country’s evolving energy landscape.
RBIDZ has expressed excitement about the rollout of the initiative through its Corporate Social Investment Programme and the opportunities it presents for participants. The organisation remains confident that by investing in people, particularly SMMEs and the youth, it can contribute meaningfully to long-term economic transformation and reducing unemployment within the region.
Through initiatives such as this, RBIDZ believes that the six trained beneficiaries will be able to meaningfully utilise the skills and knowledge gained to improve their economic prospects and contribute positively within their communities. Furthermore, RBIDZ continues to position itself as a key enabler of development by empowering individuals with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to build sustainable livelihoods and create a more inclusive economy for all.
